Biobarrier to Control Offsite Migration (Southern California)

A former industrial facility surrounded by residential neighborhoods in Orange County is impacted with PCE, TCE, TCA and their daughter products. I provided oversight for the pilot- and full-scale design and implementation of enhanced bioremediation. Despite significant “natural” biodegradation occurring at the site due to the co-release of ketones and toluene in some areas, it was determined that bioaugmentation was still warranted.

A pilot test using EVO with bioaugmentation occurred both on and offsite in 2007 and the pilot test results were very positive. Full-scale implementation occurred in 2008 at a source area beneath a building that was to be demolished to build a parking garage, and as a biobarrier along the property boundary in 2009. Monitoring of full-scale results to date are consistent with what was observed in the pilot test (Lehmicke and Puentes 2011).
